Food water shelter is an Australian, not-for-profit, non-denominational, non-governmental organisation that builds and runs eco-friendly children’s villages with education, social and health facilities for children in developing countries.
In doing so, Food water shelter aims to enhance the current and future lives of these children so that they are better able to contribute to their community and enjoy their lives.

Their first project is Kesho Leo children’s village in Tanzania which will be managed and staffed entirely by local Tanzanian people.img_0623.JPG

Aprt from buidling the village which will include:

- homes for the local orphans and their carers

- a community centre

- a nursing unit

- a kitchen

- a toilet and laundry block - toilets will be composting and the laundry grey water will be re-used

- a garden for vegetables and crops

- an area for livestock

- rainwater tanks to store rain when it falls to be used in the drier months

Food water shelter allocates five orphaned children to just one house-mum – a local African woman who has been widowed or abandoned by her husband and is keen for a home, family atmosphere and an income. Research shows that children who live in orphanages have a better chance of growing up with positive self-esteem, a sense of belonging and resilience, if they are given the chance to develop an attachment to a single care giver.

Food water shelter are creating this opportunity for its orphans by uniting groups of five children with just one house mother. Together, this family unit, will share a sleeping room and daily activities. Each house mother will take responsibility for the day-to-day care of their ‘Kesho kids’.
