Our greenies segment today takes us to Chile in South America where we meet a
group of people called save the waves who are dedicated to protecting world surf spots and the natural environment surrounding them.
Many unique and beautiful waves are been threatened as well as the water quality because of coastal development and industry. ![]()

In Chile, Pichilemu, Save the waves are investigating two pipelines threatening surfing; local villagers way of living; and water quality - one pipeline is to pump the towns waste direct into the sea and the second is to pump waste and pollution from the local pulp mill into the sea.
This poses a health risk for sea life, villagers and surfers.
We met a well known local surfer Roman, who is campaigning against the pipelines into the sea. Roman has been surfing here since seven and has been fishing with his dad in the sea, which is how they make their living.
Roman has been active in trying to stop the pipelines.
Roman explains how the waste had been going into the local lagoon which was damaging the environment and now the government has decided to send it into the sea instead because it was cheaper.
When Roman was little he used to swim in the lagoon, but its totally polluted now.
The local pulp mill has been building their pipeline for over a year.
A pulp mill is a factory that cuts down trees, washes them then cuts them up and mashes them to make paper.
This factory has already destroyed the local river with the chemicals it uses to wash the trees and a local fisherman told us how it has destroyed the beach and the fishing.
The local villagers, many who rely on fishing for their living are very worried and concerned as they are not sure how they are going to make money to live.
The local community are very hopeful that a positive solution to this problem can be found and that there is no need for these pipelines to go ahead.
Save the waves are working with the local community to try and stop these pipelines going ahead and find better ways that will not harm the environment and the local people.
