The Engine Room
23
The engine room is a very important part of a ship. There must always be two people in the engine room.
The boat Peter is on has a Polish engine. It has six cylinders which drive the boat forward by the crankshaft and this crankshaft nevers stops except when the boat is in port and when it anchors. The main generator is what turns the propeller. This engine also drives two smaller generators one which powers the boiler to keep the boat warm.
And the other generator drives the conversion of sea water to fresh water. When boats go on long expeditions they need to be able to generate their own drinking water.
On the ship they have their own workshop and this is because they are far away from from shops or anything so they must be able to create parts when they need to fix anything that might go wrong with the ship.
It is very loud in the engine room so you need to have earplugs to protect your ears.
